Back to Beaches    |    National Symbols in Turks and Caicos

Turks and Caicos Islands offer a wonderful variety of experiences and fascinating sites to visit that will suit many tastes. Some of the interesting areas to explore are listed below.

CHESHIRE HALL

This is one of the key historic attractions on the Island of Providenciales. The 200 year-old ruins of this cotton plantation are striking against the modern Provo backdrop. The building ruins which have been safeguarded and conserved by the National Trust also offer spectacular views over Provo.

CONCH FARM

Explore the only commercial conch farm in the world, where Caribbean Queen conchs are raised from veliger to adult. Here you can witness the process, enjoy a show, learn about conch pearls and even purchase fresh conch for a delicious conch salad.

CONCH WORLD

Located on Grand Turk, this unique tourism attraction consists of several buildings that showcase the Queen conch. The guided tour begins with an informative video and then proceeds to other air-conditioned facilities where excellent displays, pictures and dioramas will explain conch lore and conch farming.

The highlight of the attraction is the world famous trained conchs, Sally & Jerry who love to venture out of their shell and have their picture taken. Guests can also visit the Bare Naked Conch Café to savor the delicious farmed conch prepared in a variety of ways and the Pink Pearl Gift Shop.

TURKS & CAICOS NATIONAL MUSEUM

Grand Turk is home to the country’s only National Museum, which is located in one of the oldest stone buildings on the islands, Guinep House, which chronicles the country’s life as well as the legend of the Molasses Reef wreck, the oldest European shipwreck to be discovered in the Western Hemisphere. The Museum also houses the only dedicated gallery to the Lucayans in the world. The Lucayans were the original inhabitants of the islands from 700 AD and completely disappeared by 1520.

MIDDLE CAICOS CAVES

A visit to the caves on Middle Caicos is an unforgettable experience. The cathedral-like limestone reaches down to underwater lakes and sculpted stalagmites and stalactite. Guided tours of the caves, once home to the original settlers the Lucayans, are available daily. Caves can also be found on the uninhabited island of East Caicos where people have discovered ancient petroglyphs or markings in the cave walls by the Lucayans.

THE HOLE

Located in Long Bay in Providenciales, this natural formed massive limestone 40 foot Hole is on the list of things to see. People are lowered with a rope 80 feet below to a swimming hole. A word of caution that this pleasure is for adventurous souls only!

Things To Do, Places To Go

Bicycle Tour

Ride up and down Front Street, glide into town by the shore to explore the many different styles of island homes, some more than a century old, around Cockburn Town in Grand Turk. This is a great way to get around.

CYCLING

All of the Turks and Caicos Islands offer a wide variety of terrain for hardened mountain bikers and more relaxed cyclists – most of the islands are quite flat and so cycling is in general not too taxing. Cyclists can enjoy excellent views and can explore more off-road tracks that lead to secluded bays, creeks and coves throughout the country. Most hotels and some dive operators offer bike and scooter rentals.

BIRD WATCHING

Salt ponds and inland marshes are great feeding grounds for Great Blue Herons, Flamingos, osprey, pelicans, egrets, terns, frigates and boobies, among other water birds. See them best throughout the National Park system and at Flamingo Pond.

BONEFISHING

Whether fishing from the boat or wading the shallow water of the tidal flats, bonefishing is an exciting, unforgettable experience. This can be done across the island with trained guides to ensure that it is also a safe and positive experience.

DEEP SEA FISHING

This activity can easily be arranged with the right captain. If you would like to go deep sea fishing, or bottom fishing, find the best captain to take you to their favorite spots.

GOLF

Golfers can enjoy any of two popular golf courses and tee up at either Provo Golf Club in Providenciales or Waterloo Golf Course in Grand Turk.

HORSEBACK RIDING

Horseback riding on Grand Turk and Providenciales is a fun way to explore parts of the island.

PARASAILING

Enjoy an incredible view of Providenciales and the turquoise waters of the Atlantic Ocean, weather permitting, along north shore.

SAILING

Full day, sunset brunch or dinner cruises; explore uninhabited islands on charters or regular sail trips.

SCUBA DIVING

Scuba diving is a great pass time in Grand Turk, which boasts one of the most lush wall systems - in the world - with healthy corals, diverse marine life and visibility that exceed 100 feet, which often calls divers from around the world. You can also learn to dive, by taking special local courses.

WALKS & HIKES

A great way to learn about different parts of the island is to participate in excursions ranging from historical walking tours in Grand Turk to trail hikes in Salt Cay and many other islands.

WHALE WATCHING

Between the middle of January and April, a breath-taking spectacle in Grand Turk waters are the Humpback Whales migrating from the North Atlantic to the Silver Banks, which can be seen frolicking and putting on a show for the spectators. The Turks & Caicos Islands are one of the few places in the world where you can see the Humpback Whales in tropical waters and where swimming and snorkeling with the whales are permitted.
